Here’s a recipe for hamburger steaks with onion gravy:
Ingredients:
For the hamburger steaks:
– 1 pound ground beef
– 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
– 1/4 cup milk
– 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
– 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
– 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
– Salt and pepper to taste
For the onion gravy:
– 2 large onions, thinly sliced
– 2 tablespoons butter
– 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
– 2 cups beef broth
– 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
– Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, finely chopped onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly combined.
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a drizzle of oil. Cook the hamburger steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook the onions over medium heat until they are caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally. This process may take about 15-20 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir well to coat them evenly. Cook for another minute to cook off the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly, making sure there are no lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. If the gravy becomes too thick, you can add a little more broth to thin it out.
- Once the gravy is ready, return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat the steaks through.
- Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy hot, garnished with additional caramelized onions if desired. They pair well with mashed potatoes, rice, or a side of vegetables.
